I am a student living in Ontario, Canada. I am currently attending high school and have been given an assignment based on plastic bottles. If you can help me answer few simple questions, i would really appreciate that.
1. What is the cost of producing a plastic bottle?
2. Why are the dimensions of a plastic bottle as they are? Are you trying to minimize the cost of producing x units of bottles.

330 ml PET beer bottle
For filling beer or soft drinks, Krones AG has developed an innovative PET bottle which has been designed for the premium segment. At a weight of 27.5 g, it offers good barrier characteristics which allow the filled beer to have a shelf life of six months. The CO2 content of the filling material is up to 7.0 g per litre. The neck finish allows conventional crowns to be used as closures. This way, practically no oxygen is picked up in the bottle headroom – which is a great advantage when it comes to the beverage shelf life. The bottle base has a champagne-base design and is thus very stable. Thanks to this base which is uncommon in the nonreturnable bottle sector, the bottle is particularly suitable for premium products. A special preform with step core is used to provide sufficient material in the base area when manufacturing this PET bottle.

PET lite 6.6
With the „NitroPouch“ concept, Krones AG has developed primary packaging which combines a minimum use of materials and energy with maximum benefit for the consumer and the environment. The 500 ml „PET lite 6.6“ bottle, which is based on the „NitroPouch“ concept, sets a new milestone in the field of lightweight beverage containers thanks to its mere 6.6 g of PET. In September 2008, this concept was awarded the „Water Innovation Award“ in the category „Best packaging innovation“.
The technical innovation comes, on the one hand, in the fact that the bottle is split up into different functional areas. A smaller diameter has been selected in the top section of the bottle. This gives the user a greater amount of gripping stability. This gripping area is additionally reinforced with special grooves meaning that even an empty bottle can be labelled in this area. The bottom part of the bottle has a much larger diameter – the most part of the filled material can be found here. The wall thickness in this area lies below 0.1 mm.
On the other hand, the bottle is stabilised with nitrogen to ensure that it does not collapse during conveyance and handling. In the blow moulder-filler block, a small quantity of liquid nitrogen is injected during the filling process into the bottle. The nitrogen turns into a gas once the bottle is closed, thus providing an internal pressure of approximately 0.5 bar. With this internal pressure, the bottle can be processed on the bottling line and packed onto normal pallets without hesitation. The neck finish without neck ring, which was developed especially for this bottle, only weighs 1.3 g; even the cap is sensationally light at just 1.1 g. It is only the combination of the screw thread, the closure, material distribution, design and the use of nitrogen which makes a bottle with a weight of 6.6 g possible.

Xamos™ achieves an extremely high opacity at a low thickness that has never been possible before with monolayer PET, allowing the bottles to deliver a fourmonth minimum shelf life for UHT milk.

Single stage machine is the best solution for PET can production.
But we're using 2-stage, thus two solutions available:
1. use existing PET preforms, after blowing, cut its neck;
2. make a particular preform mold (axial stretch ratio approx.2, 20grams), then blowing to final shape.
For sure, seal the metal cap at the last.
If PET can is for CSD purpose, petloid bottom should be used.
